The Social Dilemma : Documentary Review by Jeff Orlowski

The newly modern world so called as social media has its own pros and cons. We know that using social media we can communicate easily with one another about work and with the love ones. But do we know that this human creation can cause chaos in this world too.? Based on the documentary directed by Jeff Orlowski, I do agree on how the professional explains the negativity of social media brings to our world.

Throughout this documentary we can see the dark side or feature of media social platforms made humans go wild than ever. This social media network really cause damage to the society to itself without our knowledge. The technology nowadays really did some dirty works which involving with our personal data too. It is really frustrating to see the advantage of modern tech was used wrongly by some irresponsible people in this world

First and foremost, “If you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product” by Andrew Lewis (2020) this quote was showed in the documentary to tell us that when they cannot produce profits through online selling product such as in online shopping platforms, they welling to put our data on the line and monitor our interest so that they can earn a lot of money through it. For example, they put “recommended for you” at You Tube videos and when you click it they will earn some profits.

Secondly, this tech problem also can cause numerous social issues around the world. As it was told, numerous issues occur because of social media network such as the mental health getting higher , the rate of suicide increase among youth and fake news spread widely. This problem really brings harms to all society. For example, harsh comments could lead to suicide risk among youth and fake news regarding the current situation Covid-19.

In political aspect, social media are use to spread current issues regarding the upcoming elections from another politic party news to another. But, regardless on how they try to share some updates about the politics issues in positive ways but still some of users are very irresponsible and try to create fake news to make a confusion among community. This is due to the fake news are more interesting to read instead of the truth. The fake news cause a lot of confusion happen and protest become an habit when it comes to election in the future.

Furthermore, the Social Dilemma tells us about how ISIS has inspired people online and now white supremacists are doing the same. How Internet lynch mobs in India have disturbed democracy. We have gone from the information age to the disinformation age thanks to social media fake news. Plastic surgeons have informed about a new syndrome called ‘Snapchat dysmorphia’. It is when young people want surgery so they can look more like they look in filtered selfies.

In a nutshell, the “Social Dilemma” documentary really gives a lot of information regarding the negativity of social media. So,we as social media users should not be careless and prevent ourselves to be addicted to it. Please spend time more with the love one and focus more with the surrounding instead of believing fake news.
